The Norwegian government has launched a 500,000 NOK (~$45k) prize for translators called the Fosse Prize after Nobel laureate Jon Fosse. Managed by the National Library in Oslo, the prize will be awarded annually to a professional translating from Bokmal and Nynorsk, the two official written standards of the Norwegian language. The inaugural prize will be awarded to Fosse’s longtime translator into German, Hinrich Schmidt-Henkel.
Aslak Sira Myhre, director of the National Library of Norway, said, “For a small language like Norwegian, the work of dedicated translators are crucial. It is a strenuous, creative and partly invisible work that brings literature to people and cultures closer together.”
