In a move hinted at just prior to last year’s event, the National Book Awards will now announce a longlist of 10 books in each of four categories before being whittled down to the traditional five finalists, the AP reports. The longlists will be announced on September 12, with the shortlists to follow on October 15 and the awards themselves on November 20. In addition, the National Book Awards will also expand its judging pool to include critics, booksellers, and librarians. Roger Cooper will assist digital publisher Rosetta Books as associate publisher-at-large, helping to secure new titles and original publishing opportunities as well as adding backlist ebooks. Rosetta is the first client for Cooper’s recently-created consulting firm Roger Cooper Book Associates. Francis Lam will join Clarkson Potter as editor-at-large on February 19, reporting to Pam Krauss, where he will be “seeking out new voices in the culinary landscape to contribute both cookbooks and works of narrative nonfiction.” Previously he was features editor at online food market and magazine Gilt Taste. Fountain, Boo, Shadid, Solomon Among NBCC Award Nominees
The National Book Critics Circle announced finalists in six categories. The Nona A. Balakian Citation for Excellence in Reviewing was awarded to William Deresiewicz (and, for the first time, the citation comes with $1,000 in cash thanks to a “generous donation” by board member Gregg Barrios) while Sandra Gilbert and Susan Gubar will receive the Ivan Sandrof Lifetime Achievement Award for their “pioneering work in feminist thought.” The winners will be announced on February 28 at the New School. It’s Team of Rivals Vs. Life of Pi In Top Oscar Nominations
The Academy Award candidates were announced Thursday morning, and LINCOLN (based on Doris Kearns Goodwin’s TEAM OF RIVALS) topped the list with 12 nominations, followed by LIFE OF PI, based on Yann Martel’s novel, with 11. Both are Best Picture nominees, along with three other titles based on books: ARGO — based on Antonio Mendez’s book of the same name, published in September by Viking LES MISERABLES THE SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK — based on Matthew Quick’s novel
Eng, Thayil and Pamuk Among Man Asian Candidates
Two Booker nominees, Tan Twan Eng and Jeet Thayil, compete again for the Man Asian Prize. The shortlist was just announced, with the winner to be named March 14. It’s the last round for the Man Group’s sponsorship. Spokesperson Harrison Kelly says “Since October we have been contacted by several Asian-based and global corporations about sponsoring the prize. In fact we are currently in encouraging talks with potential partners.” Last year’s winner, Kyung-sook Shin’s PLEASE LOOK AFTER MOM, is said to have sold 2 million copies worldwide.
