Norton has named Edward Crutchley the next managing director of its UK subsidiary, effective February 1, 2011, after Alan Cameron retires. Cameron is the firm’s founding managing sirector, joining Norton in 1979. Ackman Is Back, Still Trying to Put Together Borders and Barnes & Noble
Barnes & Noble stock has sunk so low again that investor Bill Ackman of Pershing Square–who lost a considerable sum on his company’s 37 percent stake in Borders–has returned to the scene with a provocative offer. Ackman still thinks there is financial reason to put the two big bookselling chains together, likely as a salvage route for Borders more than anything, and indicates he will finance a $16 a share takeover offer for the smaller, weaker Borders to buyout BN. Google eBooks Launches Today
Google’s long-awaited, long-promised ebook service begins rolling out today in the United States, unveiled in a blog post by product manager Abe Murray, leaving behind its pre-release moniker of Google Editions and now known simply as Google eBooks–one sign of how the world has changed since the web giant first started discussing selling “perpetual online access” to books in 2006. As previously indicated by the company, they expect to launch in other territories in early 2011. Oprah to Pick Two Dickens’ Books
Monday Oprah Winfrey selects Charles Dickens’ GREAT EXPECTATIONS and A TALE OF TWO CITIES as her new book club picks, revealed early when the AP purchased a copy of Penguin’s special edition $20 paperback with Oprah Book Club logo on the cover. While Penguin’s edition is the official one, multiple classics publishers have the opportunity to benefit from the selections, including Barnes & Noble. Penguin’s official ebook edition is priced at $7.99, as previously reported, though ebook editions are easily obtainable for anywhere from free to ninety-nine cents (per book).
