Janson-Smith “Tempted” Back to Publishing After a short walk on the agenting side, Patrick Janson-Smith is joining Harper UK to launch a new commercial imprint, Blue Door, “focusing primarily on fiction.” Part of Press Books, he will report to managing director John Bond. Another Boss Quits Pan Macmillan managing director David North is leaving at the end of this week after eight years with the company. He remarks: “I leave the company in great strength coming off the back of a record sales year and a strong first quarter performance. Pan Macmillan is set for an exciting future and I wish them every success.” The company quickly named former Penguin UK executive Anthony Forbes Watson as interim managing director, starting May 1. Loan Shark Improves Borders Deal, but Basically Sets October Date for Resolution Borders announced that they negotiated a slightly better financing deal with major shareholder Pershing Square for their $42.5 million term loan. Pershing will get 9.8 percent interest (instead of 12.5 percent), and it appears that they reduced the guaranteed number of stock warrants Pershing Square will receive by about a third, down to 9.55 million warrants from the original promise of 14.7 million warrants. More on Miller Bob Miller’s new experimental start-up with HarperCollins took shape quickly after a casual discussion over drinks with Harper ceo Jane Friedman at the end of February.
