DC's Politics and Prose Seeks New Owner

The news is now public that Washington, DC’s iconic Politics and Prose bookstore is up for sale. (At least one trade-related group has been in informal discussions with owners Carla Cohen and Barbara Meade recently.) Meade tells the Washington Post, “It’s time for us to stop and let somebody else take over for the future” as Cohen adds, “I just don’t have the energy like I used to.” Sadly, as the story quietly underscores, “Cohen is also seriously ill.” The store’s financials are said to be solid, though for some odd reason the newspaper chooses to cite recent sales number […]

Donna Shear will become director of the University of Nebraska Press on March 1. She has been director at the Northwestern University Press since 2003. At Riverhead, Laura Perciasepe has been promoted to associate editor. Abby Ranger, previously associate editor at Scholastic Press, has joined Disney-Hyperion Books as editor, reporting to editorial director Stephanie Owens Lurie. Willow Glen Books in San Jose will close at the end of June, owner Cathy Adkins announced. “The downturn of the economy and the steady growth of online book sales has prompted her to shutter the store” ahead of her planned retirement in 2010.Mercury […]

It is with much regret that I complete the process of closing our doors after 18 years of service to the Black community.
