Perseus Books Group has partnered with mobile technology company Incelligence to launch a handful of book-based reference products for mobile phones: The Wine Enthusiast Pocket Guide to Spirits; Quit: Read This Book And Stop Smoking; and Your Pregnancy Week by Week, in both English and Spanish versions. Incelligence’s distribution network includes such major carriers such as AT&T, Orange, SouthernLINC, T-Mobile, and Kajeet. They have a library of over 100 mobile apps. Pocket in Co-Publishing Agreement with Juno Books
Juno Books, best-known for “contemporary fantasy novels that emphasize strong female protagonists in richly imagined contexts,” will become an imprint of Pocket Books, starting with Lori Devoti’s AMAZON INK in June 2009. They plan to co-publish one title a month together. Juno started in publishing in fall 2009. Editor Paula Guran will work together with Pocket’s Jennifer Heddle on the line. Wholesaler BookStream Is Closing
In a note posted on its web site, the Poughkeepsie, NY-based wholesaler announces that they will close this Friday. (They are taking final orders today, and will “accept customer returns and process claims for damaged books” until the 23rd.) “A wholesaler, however committed to or respected by its customers, cannot be a wholesaler for very long without books. Smaller Publishers to Skip BEC, Too
Following the withdrawal of Canadian units of Random House, Penguin and HarperCollins from the Book Expo Canada trade show, other publishers are announcing that they too will skip the show this year. Scholastic Canada, H.B. Fenn and Company, and DK/Tourmaline tell Quill & Quire they will not exhibit. Executive director of the Association of Canadian Publishers Carolyn Wood says, “I won’t write it off yet, but I won’t bet any big money on seeing a trade show this year.”Q&Q
