The Second Circuit Court of Appeals struck down the injunction from last July banning publication of Frederick Colting’s 60 Years Later: Coming Through the Rye and returned the case to the original District Court, even though the appellate judges agreed that “that Salinger is likely to succeed on the merits of his copyright infringement claim.” (They also agree that the defendants “are not likely to prevail in their fair use defense.) So Colting is still expected to eventually lose in court–the question is whether the injunction barring publication while the case moves through the judicial process will stand. The District […]

Pearson Assures A "Good Start," Up 7 Percent In Q1
In a brief first quarter trading update, Pearson reported sales of 1.08 billion pounds, up seven percent driven, as usual, by the education group. They say Penguin “made a good start to the year, particularly in the US, the UK and at Dorling Kindersley. We expect another good competitive performance, with a compelling publishing schedule in the second half of the year. Growth in demand for eBooks also remains very strong, and Penguin is actively engaged in developing new publishing models for digital devices.”Statement
eNews: iPad 3G Releases, Agency Books Returning?
Today marks the next wave of the iPad release, with pre-orders of units with 3G connectivity arriving and new units going on sale in stores (“order limit: two per customer. While supplies last.”) Almost a month after the launch of the agency model in the marketplace, Diesel eBooks reports that they expect to have Penguin ebooks restored by their distribution (Ingram) next week if all goes well. “We are working to sign our second A5 by the end of this week and will update you as soon as we can disclose any further details.”Blog post

Random House’s Crown Publishing Group is reorganizing the sprawling division into “three major editorial areas” focused on “core strengths: general interest nonfiction and fiction; branded/category books; and four-color and lifestyle books,” announced yesterday. Crown itself and Broadway will come together to comprise the general interest trade line, with a search for a new executive underway. In the interim, the Crown and Broadway editors will report to recently-appointed Crown Group president Maya Mavjee. The Shaye Areheart Books imprint is being “discontinued” and Areheart will take the position of editor-at-large for Crown, where she will “edit authors with whom she has had […]
Bush In Washington Post, AP, and NYT Review
The pre-pub Laura Bush coverage continues. The Washington Post bought a copy locally, and shares more samples of the book than yesterday’s NYT report. “There is some startling stuff in here, perhaps more startling to me, who spent much of my time as a reporter covering Bush and as a writer researching her biography, searching for a shard or two of information that might reveal more about this intensely reticent and unassuming woman…. And there are some pointed choices and some unflinching honesty.” What isn’t in there? “In 432 pages, there are three brief mentions of Barack Obama.” The AP […]
