Following last night’s numerous news reports (including our own), S&S has “announced” that Jonathan Karp will take over as evp and publisher of the Simon & Schuster trade imprint on June 14 (the date published by the WSJ last night), reporting to president and ceo Carolyn Reidy. She writes in the release, “Jonathan Karp is one of the most versatile, talented and creative publishers working today. At every stage of his career he has shown a true gift for finding and making bestsellers of quality. Having competed against him to acquire books in which we were keenly interested, and then […]
Karp to Replace Rosenthal At Simon & Schuster Trade
Simon & Schuster is expected to announce tomorrow that publisher of their adult trade imprint since 1997 David Rosenthal is leaving the company. But waiting for the “announcement” is moot since the news has been confirmed to multiple people throughout the day, both inside and outside the company. Rosenthal himself has been informing people, including telling the NYT earlier tonight, “It’s been a great run for 13 years with great books and authors. Every executive reaches an expiration date.” Nonetheless, officially Simon & Schuster has repeatedly declined to confirm the news during the day. Founder of Hachette Book Group’s Twelve […]

The New Yorker has officially named their list of 20 fiction writers under the age of 40 to watch. As the NY Observer first reported and the NYT reminds us subtlety, this is not a purely editorially driven list, but rather a list of writers they like who were willing and able to provide them an unpublished work to run in the magazine. Eight of those stories will run in next week’s fiction issue; the remaining 12 will appear in the magazine throughout the summer. The winners are: Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, 32Chris Adrian, 39Daniel Alarcón, 33David Bezmozgis, 37Sarah Shun-lien Bynum, […]

Final BEA Stats Use New Measure to Count Almost 22,000 Attendees
BookExpo America (BEA) officials said this morning that verified attendance at this year’s show was 21,919 people. Exhibitors comprised just over 8,000 people, with all other “industry professionals” comprising 13,872 people in all. For the first time, the show is tabulating all people who actually attend the show. In the past BEA has provided a breakout of registrants for their “book buyer” category (which includes librarians), but now spokesman Roger Bilheimer says “we have decided that while the book buyer number is a standard of measurement that is important, it is not the only standard of measurement. In that sense, […]
