Counterpoint will close its New York editorial office at the end of October, with editorial director Denise Oswald and associate editor Anne Horowitz losing their full-time positions, though “both agreed to complete the editorial work” on books under contract on a freelance basis. Head of Counterpoint Charlie Winton says, “As everyone in the book business is aware, the industry is going through a very challenging period. Europa Editions has launched Tonga Books, a new imprint focusing on dark, literary titles that will be acquired and curated by Lovely Bones author Alice Sebold. Its first title, scheduled for a Fall 2011 release, is You Deserve Nothing by Iowa Writers Workshop student Alexander Miksik. One advantage of holding the Frankfurt Book Fair a little earlier than usual is the uncharacteristically lovely weather, with a forecast for sunny, pleasant days all week (a welcome contrast for visiting New Yorkers at the least). French Publishers Revolt Against Wylie’s E-Business Practices
Once Andrew Wylie and Random House settled their summertime differences over who controlled the e-rights to select backlist titles, all had been quiet on the Odyssey Editions front – or so it seems. But an open letter published in today’s Bookseller Daily indicates the French Publishers Association (SNE) is still very unhappy with Wylie for setting up shop as a digital publisher, and that at least four publishers – including Gallimard, which represents about 50% of Wylie’s rights business in the country – stopped doing business with the agency starting in July. Former president of Scholastic’s children’s book publishing and consultant Barbara Marcus has been working with Open Road as an adviser for children’s publishing and is in Frankfurt with the Open Road team. She “will help spearhead” their entrance into the children’s market as well as advise on international business development and general strategic issues. Her first acquisition is ebook editions of The Boxcar Children, the classic series that comprises 123 titles.
