After it became clear last week–in less than straight-forward fashion–that Lauren Myracle’s young adult book SHINE was erroneously named as a National Book Award finalist, the title has now been withdrawn from the competition and no longer appears on the National Book Foundation’s website. Myracle says in a release from publisher Amulet that she “was asked to withdraw by the National Book Foundation to preserve the integrity of the award and the judges’ work” on Friday and agreed to do so. Bookselling: Indies and BAMM Continue to Populate More Former Borders Locations
The number of former Borders locations that will re-open as new stores continues to grow. In Kingston, MA, The Book Shack will open its doors in the town’s Independence Mall as early as October 22, with owner Eric Christensen telling WickedLocal that Christensen said customers will be welcome to “connect, learn and explore,” the slogan of the new bookstore. Meanwhile Books-A-Million continues to expand, taking over a former Borders spot in Monaca, PA in mid-November, with a second store in Butler to open at a time to be determined. The Jennifer Lyons Literary Agency has acquired a number of authors for representation from Rosalie Siegel, International Agency, Inc., including the estate of William Wharton, Dennis Covington, Dana Johnson, Rev Jen and cookbook author Sudha Koul. Siegel is joining Lyons as a consultant, and has referred additional authors to the agency. Powerhouse Arena Cleans Up From Electrical Fire
An electrical fire and resulting electrical and water damaged forced Brooklyn event space and bookstore Powerhouse Arena to close earlier this week. Events director and operations manager Craig Mathis told us most of the damage affected office space, while the store itself and the upper gallery “were not damaged in any significant way,” and it has reopened to the public. Mathis added cleanup should be complete over the weekend and “we should be up and running as normal by Monday.”
AAP July Sales Numbers
The AAP is still catching up on their monthly sales numbers and just released their statistics for July. (To repeat last month’s reminder, this is the data from the limited set of publishers who reported monthly to the AAP, not to be confused with the larger pool of annual data and estimates reflected in the new Book Stats program the publishers organization runs along with the BISG, which debuted in August).
