Landlord Pledges to “Work With” The Book House In St. Louis On New Location
Earlier this week Michelle Barron, owner of The Book House in St. Louis, learned that the developer who purchased the historic Victorian property where the independent bookstore has been located since 1980 planned to demolish it this coming July and replace the building with an industrial storage facility. The company says he “will be working with departments across the company on a variety of internal and externally-directed endeavors, beginning with digital-partnership development opportunities.” He was ceo at NatureShare/Green Mountain Digital and publisher at Open Road most recently. Prior to that he had been an editor at Gotham Books before leaving publishing to attend business school. Authors with Complaints Sue Author Solutions
Following years of complaints about Author Solutions’ business practices and the big target painted when the company was acquired by Penguin last July, those grievances have turned into a lawsuit. Writers (and customers) Kelvin James, Jodi Foster, and Terry Hardy filed suit in New York federal court on April 26, seeking $5 million in punitive damages from Author Solutions and Penguin “for breach of contract, unjust enrichment, California unfair competition law, and New York general business law.” According to the complaint, obtained by Courthouse News but not yet available in the electronic docket, the three writers allege that Author Solutions “fails […]
Bertelsmann Gets $1.8 Billion for RTL Shares
Bertelsmann raised 1.4 billion euros ($1.8 billion) in cash proceeds by selling a 17 percent stake and creating a public listing for their television and broadcasting company, RTL. Bertelsmann retains 75 percent of RTL’s shares. Why should publishing people pay any attention? Because that cash will be put to work buying other companies, as Bertelsmann expects to spend up to 3 billion euros on acquisitions over the next 3 years.
