Penguin Random House to Sponsor Next California Bookstore Day
After a successful launch, California Bookstore Day will return next year on May 2, 2015, with the help of a $15,000 sponsorship from Penguin Random House. The event is organized by the Northern California Independent Booksellers Association, and the inaugural event had support from author James Patterson. Torstar Shareholders Approve Harlequin Sale
Torstar reported that its class a shareholders have approved the proposed sale of Harlequin to HarperCollins after a special meeting. In May the two companies said they expected the transaction to close by the end of September, and in Torstar’s announcement, they reiterate: “The transaction remains subject to certain customary approvals and closing conditions, including certain regulatory approvals. The parties continue to work towards satisfying these conditions and obtaining the necessary approvals.”
Wattpad Acquires Red Room and Takes It Offline With Five Days Notice
On July 3, founder of online writers community Red Room Ivy Madison posted a chipper note with “big news,” writing, “Red Room is becoming part of Wattpad!” Apparently Wattpad acquired Red Room, and wasted no time in killing it: “Red Room will go offline on Tuesday, July 8, 2014.
