Barnes & Noble’s quarterly SEC filing following the announcement of their first quarter results earlier this week contains a number of interesting revelations. The SEC investigation first disclosed in December 2013 (and first noticed by us) is nearing an end. Lorena Jones has rejoined Ten Speed Press as vp, publisher of a yet-to-be-named imprint focused on cooking and lifestyle books, reporting to Aaron Wehner. Jones was publisher of Ten Speed Press when she left in 2008 after fourteen years with the company and spent the past six years at Chronicle Books, where she was publishing director, food & drink and lifestyle. In her new role she will also serve as editor-at-large for Crown’s larger illustrated publishing program. Bertelsmann Formalizes Education Division
Not surprisingly, following the big $540 million acquisition of Relias Learning last year and a number of substantial investments in the field, Bertelsmann has set up the Bertelsmann Education Group as its own business unit. Kay Krafft, who has managed Bertelsmann’s education enterprises since 2014, is ceo of the new group, and Jarek Gabor is cfo. Forthcoming: Books from Kondo, Woodward and Heaney
Ten Speed Press will follow up Marie Kondo‘s bestseller The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up with a new book releasing on January 5. The new title, Spark Joy, “presents a comprehensive, illustrated manual on how to declutter and organize specific items throughout the house, from kitchen and bathroom items to work-related papers and hobby collections.” They will also publish a companion volume, Life-Changing Magic: A Journal, on December 29. Tidying Up has sold over 1.5 million copies. Simon & Schuster announced the publication of Bob Woodward‘s The Last of the President’s Men for publication October 13.
