Mia Alvar won the PEN/Bingham prize for debut fiction for her story collection In the Country, presented on Monday night. Ta-Nehisi Coates won PEN/Diamonstein-Spielvogel Award for the Art of the Essay. Toni Morrison was unable to attend the awards gala, so Errol McDonald accepted the PEN/Saul Bellow Award for Achievement in American Fiction on her behalf.
