Ingram sent a Street Smart Alert telling accounts that an untitled book from Random House Trade Paperbacks publishing June 26 will be the next Oprah’s Book Club selection, Early Word reports. From the findable metadata, the new pick looks unusual: The 416-page paperback, a work of fiction, lists an age range of 8 – 12 years old and a grade level of 3 – 7. Cached versions of since-purged pages from Random House’s own international/export listings for the matching ISBN [9780525509714] had listed the author as veteran writer Laurie Rozakis. But a Rizzoli bookstore listing for the same ISBN, which seems less reliable […]

Book Expo Announces A Modest 7,425 Attendees; Book Con Reaches 20,000 Goal
As reported ahead of the show, Book Expo was small this year — in square footage, in length (two exhibition days), and in scope (reduced conferences) — and organizers confirmed in a letter on Wednesday that attendance was modest as well, in line with their stated intention to “curate a high-quality attendance of the people exhibitors told us they value the most” that vetted “self-published authors, bloggers, digital service providers and consultants.” Show director Brien McDonald said their preliminary count registered 7,425 attendees, “comprised primarily of booksellers, librarians, retailers and media.” In the past media has been counted separately, in its […]
People, Etc.: Ed Victor Dies, and More
Literary agent Ed Victor, 77, died the evening of June 7 of a heart attack, following a long battle with chronic lymphocytic leukemia, his company Ed Victor Ltd. confirmed to the Bookseller. The agency said: “Ed was a one-off: the toughest yet most professional of agents, who would always get the very best deal for his clients. An inveterate party-goer, he often attended three events in an evening. He will be a huge loss to the publishing industry and the wider world, and we miss him dearly.” The agency celebrated its fortieth anniversary last November. Born in New York, Victor went to […]

Briefs: Glasgow’s Freight Books To Sell, and More
Glasgow publisher Freight Books is up for sale, with the owners saying potential buyers have come forward and a listing running inviting others to bid. Co-founder Adrian Searle left the company suddenly in April, citing “differences over strategic direction” and calling the publisher’s future into question. Interim managing editor Robbie Guillory informed authors of plans to explore other opportunities by posting a notice on the Publishing Scotland website, but said that in the meantime “we continue as normal, and I’ll certainly not be stepping back from my efforts at marketing, selling and producing.” Bookselling Miami’s Bookstore in the Grove will close June […]
