Appleton, WI-based bookstore chain Book World, Inc. has run a notice in the local paper announcing that they will start liquidating their inventory as of November 2, after which they expect that all of their stores will close: “A liquidation sale will begin at each Book World store location which will run until all inventory is sold. Court Denies Restraining Order to Block Allan Say’s Children’s Book About James Castle
Earlier this month, the estate of primitive artist James Castle filed suit against author and illustrator (and Caldecott medalist) Allan Say and his publisher Scholastic, seeking a restraining order to block publication of the forthcoming book, SILENT DAYS, SILENT DREAMS. The suit takes issue with 28 of the approximately 150 illustrations in the book, which “are Say’s own depictions of various events in Castle’s life, drawn in a style similar to that of Castle.” Calling them “virtually identical copies of James Castle’s distinctive, singular works,” the suit alleges copyright infringement. UK bookseller Waterstones has retained investment bank NM Rothschild, to look for a new lender or possibly a new owner for the chain. That representation is making news following a report last week in the Evening Standard suggesting that current owner Alexander Mamut is facing financial pressure in the wake of the collapse of Russian bank Otkritie, in which Mamut was a big shareholder. Longtime Little, Brown executive editor Tracy Behar will become vp, publisher and editor-in-chief of a new imprint for the division, devoted to health, lifestyle, psychology, and science. The imprint will launch in fall 2018, and will include an additional editor and dedicated marketer.
