John Donatich has been named to a fourth term as director Yale University Press, where he has served for 15 years. Julia Reidhead, president of W. W. Norton and chair of the board of governors of Yale University Press, says, “John Donatich’s reappointment is welcome news. Briefs: A Public Space to Launch APS Books, and More
Literary magazine A Public Space is launching a book imprint, APS Books. Founding editor Brigid Hughes will lead the imprint. The first title will be Betty Howland’s collection of short stories Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage in 2018, with titles to follow from British filmmaker Sally Potter and artist Dorothea Tanning, as well as an “anthology of responses to Italo Calvino unwritten sixth memo, edited by Martha Cooley, with contributions from Jhumpa Lahiri and Andrei Codrescu, among others.” Hughes succeeded George Plimpton as the editor of the Paris Review in 2003 and left to found A Public Space in 2006. Guinness World Records Sues Scholastic Over Competing Book
Earlier this month Guinness World Records filed suit in a Manhattan Federal Court against Scholastic, over their forthcoming Book of World Records 2018, arguing that it “obviously copies and incorporates the trade dress of Guinness World Records 2018, and infringes on GWR’s copyrights and trade dress rights in its book.” Saying that Scholastic’s cover “is nearly identical” to Guinness’s, they charge that “Scholastic’s publication of its book constitutes willful copyright infringement and unfair competition, and is a transparent attempt to trade on the fame and goodwill associated with Guinness World Record brand books.” Guinness asks the court for injunctions, as […]

Beth Harrison is joining the National Book Foundation as deputy director. She comes from the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, where she was assistant executive director for development and external relations. Previously she served for 11 years at the Academy of American Poets, most recently as interim executive director. Michael Eisenberg has been promoted to vice president, associate publisher for the Highlights Retail Group. Melanie Iglesias Perez, Loan Le, and Haley Weaver have each been promoted to assistant editor at Atria Books. Distribution Ampersand will represent Self-Counsel Press in Canada, from Alberta to Eastern Canada.
