NBF Will Consider Some Authors Living in the US without Citizenship for Awards
As part of a reminder to publishers about their upcoming submissions deadline, the National Book Foundation has also expanded the eligibility for the National Book Awards. Up until now, nominees had to be written by a US citizen. Now, in which executive director Lisa Lucas confirms is a “permanent change” in the rules, “if authors are non-U.S. citizens or have particularly complex immigration issues, there is…a petition process.” Publishers are asked to tell the NBF if the author “has lived in the United States for 10 or more years as of November 30 of the Awards year.” They are also […]

Junot Diaz was accused of inappropriate behavior by author Zinzi Clemmons on Friday, writing on Twitter: “As a grad student, I invited Junot Diaz to speak to a workshop on issues of representation in literature. I was an unknown wide-eyed 26 yo, and he used it as an opportunity to corner and forcibly kiss me. Simon & Schuster’s parent company CBS reported first quarter earnings on Thursday afternoon, with sales at the book publisher down $1 million, to $160 million, and operating income up $1 million, to $16 million, “reflecting lower operating expenses resulting from the revenue mix.” (CBS overall had “record first-quarter revenue” of $3.76 billion” and an “all-time quarterly high in adjusted operating income of $772 million.) No Nobel Literature Prize In 2018
The Swedish Academy, which awards the Nobel Prize in Literature, says it will not name a winner in 2018, instead postponing the selection of this year’s laureate to 2019 (when it will also announce next year’s winner simultaneously.) The news follows a sexual abuse and leaking scandal and multiple resignations from committee members, including the resignation of permanent secretary Sara Danius, leaving the 18-member Academy with only 10 active members at the moment.
