AAP Adds Annual Estimates for 2017
The AAP released their annual industry guesstimates for 2017 — this is the product called StatShot Annual, compiled separately from the monthly StatShot reports which tabulate actual publisher reports only. (StatShot Annual uses “modeling” — e.g. multiplication — taking reported data, and presuming there is a valid methodology for using the known to make estimates for all of the publishing entities that never ever report any data, despite multiple efforts to reach them. It’s a good method to tell Congress this might be a $26 billion industry when you are lobbying, which is the AAP’s primary function, though it isn’t […]
Briefs: Eyewear Publishing Has “Suspended All Poetry Projects”
UK-based small press Eyewear Publishing announced on Twitter that “In light of the decision by several Eyewear poets to happily announce new books with rival presses today without warning Director @toddswift_dr has suspended all poetry projects. Poets who abandon their debut presses do severe damage in terms of sales and funding to them.” That post drew a lot of criticism online, and both the tweet and the Eyewear Twitter account were deleted. In contrast, this week an Eyewear author, Jenna Clarke, was one of the winners of UK Society of Authors’ 2018 awards for a collection of poems by a […]
UK Trade Stats Show Big Export Business Vulnerable to Brexit, Foreign Exchange and More
We value industry-compiled statistics, but this week’s release of 2017 numbers from the UK’s Publishers Association provides a reminder that you need to focus on the data itself rather than the press release (which will always tell that you business is great). Like most of the UK press, we’re going by the headline release rather than the full dataset. (Generally we’ll only report on data that we have seen in full, but the UK coverage is so abundant and confusing, we’re making an exception. What the announcement says is, “The UK publishing industry had a record-breaking year in 2017, with […]

Tor Tests Windowing Frontlist Library eBooks, Joins Broader Library Impact Data Study
Tor Books has begun windowing ebook versions of frontlist titles (e.g. the adult science line) for the library market starting with July releases, delaying their availability for library ebook distribution to four months after the retail on-sale date. The company told libraries this is “part of a test program to determine the impact of eLending on retail sales,” and said they would “work closely with our library vendors who service this channel to evaluate the results and develop ongoing terms that will best support Tor’s authors, their agents, and Tor’s channel partners.” The test period was described as “open-ended.” President […]
