Author and former editor of literary website The Rumpus Stephen Elliott filed a lawsuit in New York’s Eastern District against Moira Donegan, the creator of the S—-y Media Men list on Wednesday. Elliot alleges “libelous communication of knowingly false statements” in the private Google spreadsheet that became very public, along with intentional infliction of emotional distress, and negligent infliction of emotion distress. Elliott published an essay on Quillette in September, called How An Anonymous Accusation Derailed My Life. McCabe’s Book Is Postponed, As FBI Is Accused of Slow-Walking Review
Publication of the forthcoming book from fired deputy director of the FBI Andrew McCabe THE THREAT: How the FBI Protects America in the Age of Terror and Trump has been postponed. St. Martin’s had intended to publish December 4, but has rescheduled the book for February 2019, pending an ongoing pre-publication review of the manuscript by the FBI. WH Smith Has Stable Profit, Still Declining Sales in High Street
UK book retailer WH Smith announced preliminary results for the year ended August 31, 2018. Overall, revenue increased 2 percent, at £1.262 million this year, with group trading profit up 3 percent, to £163 million, both driven by their travel division. Revenues from the High Street bookstores declined 3 percent, on both a like-for-like and overall basis, down to £590 million from £610 million. Book sales, however, declined further, falling 6 percent like-for-like. Stationery, meanwhile, continues to grow and now accounts for “about half” of High Street sales. Amazon’s CreateSpace Continues to Grow, Devour Self-Published Print Market
Bowker released their annual statistics for 2017 charting the release of self-published books that carry ISBNs issued by the company (and as we know, a large number of self-published titles, particularly ebooks, do not carry ISBNs at all). The report has essentially become a chronicle of Amazon’s steady march to dominate print self-publishing in the same way that their KDP has long dominated ebook self-publishing. For 2017, there were 879,587 self-published print titles that carried ISBNs — and 751,924 of them came from CreateSpace (which is now being merged with KDP), comprising over 85 percent of the total.
