NBCC Finalists, With Honors for Orange, Corrigan, and Arte Publico Press
The National Book Critics Circle announced 31 finalists in six categories for its 2018 awards, along with three award winners. Arte Público Press wins the Ivan Sandrof Lifetime Achievement Award; Tommy Orange’s novel There There wins the John Leonard Prize recognizing an outstanding first book; and Maureen Corrigan receives the Nona Balakian Citation for Excellence in Reviewing. Parneros Motions for Advancement of Attorney Fees to Fight Counterclaim
On Friday January 18 came multiple filings in Parneros v. Barnes & Noble. The bookseller’s former ceo Demos Parneros demanded the company pay his attorney fees and expenses in fighting its counterclaim, again citing the indemnification clause in his contract. Final IRS Guidance On Business Tax Break Favors Publishing Professionals, Except for “Performing Arts” Licenses
On Friday the Treasury Department issued “final regulations and other guidance” to help clarify the application of last year’s tax cut for many owners of sole proprietorships, partnerships, trusts, and S corporations. One closely-watched provision for high-earning authors and other creators, as well as independent publishing professionals such as agents, scouts, publicists and others, is the section that exempts a “specified service trade or business” (SSTB) from taking the new business deduction if the person’s taxable income exceeds $157,500 (or $315,000 for a married couple filing jointly).
