Leaver and Smith Form New Publisher, Acquire Carlton Books to Start
Two experienced UK publishing executives — Mark Smith (formerly ceo of Bonnier Zaffre, and before that Quercus) and Marcus Leaver (formerly ceo of Quarto, and before that Sterling) — have joined to form Welbeck Publishing Group. People in businesses like ours still think of William Morris Endeavor as a talent agency, but ever since their acquisition of IMG for approximately $2.4 billion in 2014, the parent company has become a hedge-fund controlled entertainment group that also owns a talent agency. Subsequent deals included the purchase of a controlling interest in Ultimate Fighting Championship, as well as purchases of Professional Bull Riders, the Miss Universe pageant, branding and marketing agency 160over90, digital media distribution company NeuLion, and more. Bonnier UK Discloses Big Losses and Recapitalization, Predicts A Profitable 2019
Struggling Bonnier Books UK announced improved sales in 2018, at £71.5 million (up 15 percent compared to 2017), and a reduced operating loss of £3.6 million. Operating EBITA was up £11m compared to 2017. “After a very weak 2017, Bonnier Books UK has made sizable progress towards its goal of sustainable profitability and looks set to be back in the black by 2019,” said Jim Zetterlund, chairman of Bonnier Books UK.
