Molly Stern Launches New Publisher, Zando
Two years after she was dismissed from her position as svp, publisher of Crown in a reorganization after it was merged into the Random House Publishing Group, Molly Stern has formally announced her new independent publishing company, Zando (named for her sons, Zach and Oscar). The company is backed by “a significant start-up investment” from Sister, the studio founded in 2019 by Elisabeth Murdoch, Stacey Snider and Jane Featherstone. Macmillan to Close Children’s Line, Imprint
Macmillan Children’s is closing their imprint called Imprint, founded by Erin Stein in late 2014. A representative told PL, “Six positions will be eliminated as of December 1. As a result of this change, we have also decreased the size of our marketing team and three positions have been eliminated as of November 14. We plan to publish all books acquired by Imprint under other imprints at MCPG.” Macmillan had substantial layoffs “across the organization” this spring when the pandemic first hit. Salary Updates: Penguin Random House, Simon & Schuster
Further to the news that Penguin Random House will raise its entry level salaries to $45,000 at the beginning of 2021, they wrote in an internal memo that “second and third level non-exempt roles” will also receive raises, with “minimum salaries of $50,000 and $55,000 respectively.” The minimum salary for exempt-level positions in New York City will increase from $58,500 (the legal minimum in New York City) to $60,000.
