Controversies: More Accusations Against Blake Bailey
More accusations have surfaced against Philip Roth biographer Blake Bailey, this time from four women at Old Dominion University, who say Bailey sexually harassed them when he was a teacher there. The Virginian-Pilot reports that over a dozen people at the university have spoken out about the accusations, and that the university administration was aware of Bailey’s behavior and did nothing. Linguistics professor Bridget Anderson is among the new accusers. Post-Brexit, UK Considers Change to Copyright Laws
Now that the UK has left the European Union, the UK government must decide on its own rules for copyright exhaustion on physical books and other intellectual property. On Monday, the government opened a consultation on whether to institute parallel trade—common in pharmaceuticals and other consumer goods—which would allow for the resale of printed books across borders without publisher permission. Until the end of 2020, once a book was placed on the market in the UK and European Economic Area, the copyright was “exhausted” and authors and publishers had no control over the resale of their book in those countries. Once again, Barnes & Noble is replacing a lost location with a much smaller nearby store. In Ulster, NY, where the chain closed a 24,636-square-foot space in April, they have been given a permit for a new 7,656-square-foot space in the same area.
Wiley Reports a Strong Fourth Quarter, with a Favorable Outlook
Wiley reported fourth quarter and fiscal year results for the period ended April 30, with sales of $536 million, up from $474.6 million, a 13 percent increase, including $14.8 million in foreign exchange variance and acquisitions. Operating income was $51.2 million, improved from a loss of ($170.7) million a year ago, and adjusted EBITDA was $112.7 million, up from $92.8 million.
