Obituary: Milan Kundera
Czech novelist Milan Kundera, 94, died on Tuesday in France after a prolonged illness. A communist supporter who was twice expelled from the party, his books were critical of Soviet leadership and banned in his native country. Kundera’s most popular book, THE UNBEARABLE LIGHTNESS OF BEING (1984) was not published in the Czech Republic until 2006.
Simon & Schuster and Likewise Expand Partnership
Simon & Schuster has expanded its partnership with entertainment platform Likewise to bring book recommendations to readers. The agreement builds on a previous partnership which created a Likewise/S&S community. Imprints: Wharton School Press
Wharton School Press (WSP), the book publishing arm of the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, is now an imprint of the University of Pennsylvania Press (Penn Press). This follows a two-year licensing and distribution partnership between the two presses. WSP publisher Shannon Berning says in the release, “It is a tremendous opportunity to expand on our partnership with Penn Press. Penn Press’s deep knowledge of book publishing and the strategic mission alignment between our organizations will enable Wharton School Press to grow its publishing list and expand the reach of its books as well as Wharton faculty research.”
Actually Forthcoming: Britney Spears’ ‘The Woman in Me’ to Publish In October
After much speculation, Britney Spears’ memoir, THE WOMAN IN ME, will be published by Gallery on October 24, People was first to report. According to the publisher, the book is “a brave and astonishingly moving story about freedom, fame, motherhood, survival, faith, and hope.” Gallery svp, publisher Jennifer Bergstrom told the magazine, “Britney’s compelling testimony in open court shook the world, changed laws, and showed her inspiring strength and bravery.
