Judy Clain will join Simon & Schuster on January 16 as senior vice president and publisher of a relaunched Summit Books imprint, reporting to ceo Jonathan Karp. Clain has been editor-in-chief at Little, Brown since 2011, where she has worked since 1998. Summit Books was active from 1976 to 1991 and published Elie Wiesel, Marilyn French, James Baldwin, and Oliver Sacks. Imprints: Green City Books
Isaac Peterson, and Jessica Hammerman have launched a new independent publisher called Green City Books based in Bend, OR. Distributed by Publishers Group West, Green City “plans to publish between six and twelve titles a year, focusing on original voices in fiction and nonfiction, and creating a platform for artistic vision and excellence in the craft of writing.” Peterson, whose background is in design, and Hammerman, an editor who previously worked at Putnam and Norton as well as several magazines, will serve as publishers. Right on schedule as usual, with many more listmakers weighing in, the favorites have separated into two pretty clear lists of top fiction and nonfiction.
