College student spending on course materials declined 4 percent in the 2024-2025 school year from the previous year, market researcher Student Monitor reports. Additionally, individual student spending has gone down 54 percent over the past 10 years, with each student spending approximately $318 in 2024-2025, compared to $691 in 2014-2015. The decline is attributed in part to participation in “inclusive access” programs that provide students with all of their textbooks at the beginning of the year, purchased by the institution in bulk.
