National Book Award Longlist: Fiction

September 17, 2021By Katy Hershberger

The NBA longlist announcements concluded Friday morning with fiction. The finalists for all categories will be announced on October 5, and winners will be announced at the in-person National Book Awards ceremony on November 17.

If you’re counting (OK, yes we are), Penguin Random House has 16 titles across the longlists, while the other four large trade publishers combined have 10 titles in contention. Seven Norton titles were longlisted, as were three Graywolf books, with the other 24 selections coming from across independent publishers.

On the fiction list, Richard Powers is the only author to longlist for both the NBA and the Booker:

Anthony Doerr, Cloud Cuckoo Land (Scribner)
Lauren Groff, Matrix (Riverhead)*
Jakob Guanzon, Abundance (Graywolf Press)
Laird Hunt, Zorrie (Bloomsbury)
Honorée Fanonne Jeffers, The Love Songs of W. E. B. Du Bois (Harper)*
Robert Jones, Jr., The Prophets (Putnam)**
Katie Kitamura, Intimacies (Riverhead Books)
Elizabeth McCracken, The Souvenir Museum: Stories (Ecco)
Jason Mott, Hell of a Book (Dutton)
Richard Powers, Bewilderment (W. W. Norton & Company)
