The National Book Foundation will give its annual Literarian Award for Outstanding Service to the American Literary Community to Paul Yamazaki, principal buyer at City Lights Booksellers & Publishers in San Francisco. He started at City Lights in 1970 as a part-time clerk. They write in a release that Yamazaki has “mentored generations of booksellers, and his collaborative approach to bookselling has elevated countless authors, shaping the United States’ literary landscape for over 50 years.” Mitchell Kaplan will present him the award at the National Book Awards ceremony on November 15.
