Virginia Politicians Seek Restraining Order Against B&N for Selling Two Books
The Virginia Beach Circuit Court issued preliminary orders finding “probable cause to believe” that two books — A COURT OF MIST AND FURY by Sarah J. Maas and GENDER QUEER by Maia Kobabe — are deemed “obscene for unrestricted viewing by minors” under Virginia state law. The authors or publishers have 21 days to respond to the allegations. The orders are the result of agitation by two local politicians: Attorney Tim Anderson, a member of the Virginia House of Delegates, petitioned the court on behalf of his client Tommy Altman, a candidate in the Republican congressional primary, Book Riot reported. Obituary: Ann Spinelli
Former Putnam vp, executive art director Ann Spinelli died on May 9 at 77. Starting in 1981, she worked at Putnam for 30 years, and designed and art directed covers by Tom Clancy, Amy Tan, Kurt Vonnegut and others. “Ann is remembered as a mentor to the designers whose careers she launched and who are top talents in publishing today. Ann was passionate about design, the authors and artists with whom she worked, and the colleagues with whom she collaborated. Her kindness, generosity, and unique sense of humor left an indelible mark on all,” the publisher said in a statement.
