More Record Profits: Bloomsbury Up for First Half of 2021
Bloomsbury announced its “highest ever first half sales and profits” for the six-month period ending August 31. Overall sales were £101 million, up from £78 million in the first half of 2020, or 29 percent. Pre-tax earnings were £11.1 million, up from £3 million. France Passes Legislation Requiring Minimum Shipping Rate
French parliament has passed, but not enacted, a law requiring a minimum shipping fee for books, Reuter’s reports. The legislation is clearly aimed at Amazon, which charges as little as one cent for shipping, after France banned free shipping in 2014 in an attempt to level the playing field with independent bookstores.
Inaugural Marysue Rucci Books List Announced
Marysue Rucci’s eponymous imprint with Scribner will launch in summer 2022 with four titles — Mother Noise: A Memoir by Cindy House and The Foundling by Ann Leary, both out in May, and Fellowship Point by Alice Elliott Dark and The Last to Vanish by Megan Miranda, both publishing in July. Printed Matter Bookstore Unionizes
Employees at Printed Matter, a nonprofit art book store in New York, joined the Office and Professional Employees International Union Local 153. Management voluntarily recognized the union on October 18, and contract bargaining will begin soon. In an Instagram post, the union said, “We’re so excited about this big next step and are grateful that Printed Matter management has been cooperative and proud of our decision so far. “We see books and multiples as inherently non-hierarchical art forms, and this has shaped the collaborative and radical organizational history of Printed Matter.
