Following the abrupt departure of Mark Kuyper after less than a year with the organization, the Book Industry Study Group (BISG) has hired longtime consultant Brian O’Leary to serve as executive director, beginning October 3. BISG Chair Tara Catogge says in the announcement, “Over nearly two decades as a consultant, he has worked with a wide range of book publishers and associations, using his insight and experience to shape their strategy and operations. The National Book Awards announced their nonfiction longlist Wednesday morning, with fiction to follow the following day. Half of the shortlist contains titles from Penguin Random House imprints, and Pulitzer winner for fiction Viet Thanh Nguyen appears as well. The Booker Prize announced their shortlist, with the winner to be named October 13 [Update: The correct awards date is October 25]. Two Americans — Paul Beatty for his NBCC-winning novel and Ottessa Moshfegh for her PEN/Hemingway debut winner — are in contention in a field that includes no previous Booker winners.
