Alexander Takes Newbery, Santat Wins Caldecott, Woodson Gets King (and Newbery Honor)
The ALA presented their many Youth Media Awards Monday morning on the closing day of their winter meeting in Chicago. The Newbery medal went to THE CROSSOVER by Kwame Alexander (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt), and the Caldecott was awarded to THE ADVENTURES OF BEEKLE: The Unimaginary Friend written and illustrated by Dan Santat (Little, Brown Children’s). Among other honorees, Jandy Nelson won the Michael L. Printz Award for I’LL GIVE YOU THE SUN (Dial Books) and Sharon M. Draper won the Margaret A. On Tuesday, the UK’s Sky News reported that Pearson chairman Glen Moreno is “preparing to leave the company later this year” after 10 years there. Their sources say that Pearson has retained a headhunter to oversee the recruitment of a new chair. (It had been announced previously that Moreno will become chairman of Virgin Money later this year.) The second book on Mark Zuckerberg’s 2015 reading list is Steven Pinker‘s The Better Angels of Our Nature (Viking/Penguin). “It’s a timely book about how and why violence has steadily decreased throughout our history, and how we can continue this trend,” Zuckerberg writes.
