Awards: NBCC Adds Translated Book Prize
The National Book Critics Circle announced the Gregg Barrios Book in Translation Prize, which “seeks to highlight the artistic merit of literature in translation and recognize translators’ valuable work, which expands and enriches American literary culture by bringing world literature to English-language readers.” The inaugural prize will honor a book from any genre translated into English and published in the US in 2022, and will be judged by all NBCC members, not just those on the board. Barnes & Noble’s Final Finalists for Their Actual Book of the Year
Two weeks ago Barnes & Noble announced their buyers’ picks for best books of the year overall and across multiple categories. Now the chains’ booksellers have duly picked 5.5 of the buyers’ top 11 as finalist for their Book of the Year designation, to be named November 18. Both include titles Anthony Doerr, Paul McCartney, T.J. Klune, and Louise Erdrich, with booksellers favoring a picture book in verse from Nikole Hannah-Jones’s 1619 Project over the adult book. Awards: Governor General’s and Cundhill Finalists
Two big Canadian literary prizes announced their nominees. The Governor General’s awards named English-language nominees in seven categories, including Fiction, where the field includes Rachel Cusk’s SECOND PLACE. Winners will be revealed on November 17. The Cundhill History Prize named their nominees as well (with the winner to be announced December 2.)
Awards: Andrew Carnegie Medals; German Book Prize
The extensive longlists for the 2022 Andrew Carnegie Medals for Excellence in Fiction and Nonfiction were announced. The shortlist, consisting of three fiction and three nonfiction titles, will be announced on November 8. The German Book Prize was awarded to Antje Rávik Strubel for her novel Blaue Frau (S. Fischer).
