The Frankfurt Book Fair has been forced to abandon plans to convene a smaller, live version of the trade event in October, due to new quarantine rules effective October 1 that would “make it nearly impossible for European exhibitors and trade visitors to participate.” US publishers were already blocked from attending, Canada had postponed their appearance as guest of honor, and the largest international publishers — including those headquartered in Germany — had already declared months ago they would forgo any live exhibition. Events: Virtual National Book Awards, and A Grant for Frankfurt
The National Book Awards ceremony on November 18 and all of the associated events will be held virtually this year. As a result, the organization will spread its events out, starting with the 5 Under 35 list on October 20. The NBA finalist reading is set for November 10 and Teen Press Conference held in partnership with the Miami Book Fair will be on November 16. Lagardere Publishing has joined Simon & Schuster, HarperCollins, Macmillan and others in announcing that none of its divisions from around the world will attend the Frankfurt Book Fair this year: “After carefully reflecting on the situation and also taking into consideration the health and safety of our employees and partners, we’ve decided that Hachette Livre France, Hachette UK, Hachette Book Group and Grupo Anaya (Hachette España) will not exhibit at the Frankfurt Book Fair this year. Big Publishers Including HarperCollins Are Ready to Skip Frankfurt
Following Wednesday’s announcement that the Frankfurt Book Fair plans to proceed in limited form this October, at least some large publishing divisions have announced they will not attend.
