After lengthy financial struggles that were often referred to but rarely made plain, the Tattered Cover Book Store’s corporate owner filed a voluntary petition for reorganization under Chapter 11’s streamlined Subchapter V in the US Bankruptcy Court for the District of Colorado. If approved by the court, the bookstore will be able to access up to $1 million in debtor-in-possession financing, “provided by a newly created entity” formed by current investors and board members Leslie Rainbolt and Margie Gart. Solid State Books in Washington, DC has opened a second location, at 1809 14th St. NW. Barnes & Noble will open a store in Gainesville, GA in “early 2024.” Their last location in the area closed in 2013.
Bomb Threat at The King’s English Bookstore in Salt Lake City
The King’s English Bookstore in Salt Lake City, UT was temporarily shut down by a bomb threat on Sunday morning targeting a drag queen story hour. Salt Lake City police heard of a “suspicious circumstance” around 9:30 and, after determining it was a bomb threat, evacuated the store to search for explosives, clearing it to reopen around 11. Title IX: A Bookstore in New London, CT will close on October 1. Bank Square Books in Mystic, CT, which is under the same ownership, will continue to operate. Both are owned by Anne Philbrick, who also owned Savoy Bookshop & Cafe in Westerly, RI, which shut down over the summer. Title IX launched as a popup in November 2020. The Bookstore Community Fund, started by Philbrick and the bookstore in 2022 to help make books more accessible for the New London community, will continue. BAM Offers Same and Next-Day Delivery
Books-A-Million is partnering with Walmart’s GoLocal delivery platform to offer same and next-day delivery for online orders of products that are in-stock at a nearby store. Orders placed before 3PM will arrive the same day, and after 3PM will be delivered the next day.
