Penguin Random House UK has proposed closing its third-party distribution center in Grantham in 2025 due to rising costs and “supply chain challenges”, the Bookseller reports. The warehouse handles distribution for more than 40 publishers and has a staff of approximately 200, who are at risk of being laid off. Amazon Antitrust Settlement With EU Coming
Something to keep an eye on in the quiet holidays ahead: Amazon and the European Union are reported to have agreed upon a settlement of two antitrust cases, which “will force the company to make significant changes to its business practices,” the NYT reports. Canadian Distributor Thomas Allen to Close In 2023
After over a hundred years in business, Ontario-based distributor Thomas Allen & Son will close at the end of March 2023, when their relationship with Workman Publishing terminates. Since Workman accounted for a substantial portion of Allen’s business — and Hachette handles its own Canadian distribution — the company indicates the closure was set in motion by the sale of Workman to Hachette Book Group in late 2021.
