The Eyjafjallajökull volcano sent up a fresh plume of ash over the weekend, resulting in at least some closures of UK air space. Even Though Colting's Book "Likely" Infringes Salinger, Appeals Court Tells Judge to Consider Injunction More Thoroughly
The Second Circuit Court of Appeals struck down the injunction from last July banning publication of Frederick Colting’s 60 Years Later: Coming Through the Rye and returned the case to the original District Court, even though the appellate judges agreed that “that Salinger is likely to succeed on the merits of his copyright infringement claim.” (They also agree that the defendants “are not likely to prevail in their fair use defense.) Before dying of lung cancer in fall 2002, historian Stephen Ambrose’s reputation was tarnished as Forbes and other publications found evidence of plagiarism in Ambrose’s works–first in his book THE WILD BLUE, but then in at least six other books and even his doctoral thesis. 2011 Federal Budget Would Strip Funding for Reading is Fundamental
The Department of Education has proposed stripping the independent non-profit Reading Is Fundamental of their federal grant–which comprises 75 percent of their annual revenues. The DOE’s plan is that RIF and the National Writing Project–also set to lose funding–would compete for funds on a state-by-state basis. Department spokesman Dave Thomas says “this proposed approach will give state education agencies and local education agencies greater flexibility to focus on their areas of greatest need and will be more effective than the narrow categorical programs.” Or it will mean that the organization spends a big chunk of its resources on administration and […]
PW Sold to Former Publisher Slowik
One-time PW publisher (in the late 80s and 90s) and now board member at regional and custom-magazine publisher Wainscot Media George Slowik has purchased PW from Reed Elsevier. Slowik is retaining the entire staff and recently-appointed management of publisher Cevin Bryerman and co-editors Jim Milliot and Michael Coffey.
Waterstone's Unveils New Corporate Strategy
HMV executives are meeting with City analysts today to unveil some new strategies for Waterstone’s to improve business, which HMV hopes will improve the bookstore chain’s net profit margin in the short term to 2-3% and in the medium term to 3-4%. The big changes Waterstone’s has in mind include a new e-book store to launch by May, a repositioning of range, a greater focus on local promotions, increasing non-book sales from 6% to 10% by 2013, and making the most of Borders transfer sales opportunities, as £60m of sales from Borders up for grabs in locations overlapping with Waterstone’s.
