Google announced Wednesday that their RSS feed aggregator Reader will be “retired” July 1, claiming that “over the years usage has declined.” The announcement led to venting online and a quick scramble for recommendations for comparable services–and at least Google has provided enough advance notice to let others fill the gap they are creating. At PublishersMarketplace we have provided literally thousands of RSS feeds for years–including one for every Dealmaker we track–and we serve well over 10,000 RSS requests a day. While it’s not substitute for Google Reader, we’ll use this opportunity to remind readers of the handy, somewhat under-utilized […]
Publishers Marketplace Tips
Milestones, Missed
Like many of you we’re still working on getting back to normal after the storm. Along the way we missed taking note of a variety of interesting milestones. Most importantly, we missed our very own anniversary, marking 11 lucky years of PublishersMarketplace.com. As members may recall, we often try to schedule a technological gift or two in alignment with our birthday. We have a big one on the way this year, which will truly offer “something for everyone,” but storm delays have bumped the unveiling to next month. (There are some other surprises in the works for early next year, […]
Speaking of Stats
We have a few interesting numbers of our own to share with you. Last month saw our highest traffic ever at PublishersMarketplace.com, just shy of 2 million true visitor page views (leaving out all the spiders and bots). Indeed our traffic has been strong all year, up about 18 percent over last year. Then as we started paging back, we saw that in fact, our traffic has consistently grown about 18 percent a year for at least the last five years. As regular readers and visitors know, that’s without any stunts to artificially boost site traffic, like jumping our daily […]
A New Way to Use Our Contacts
The PublishersMarketplace Contacts database has long been one of our most popular features and now we are rolling out a way to make it even more useful: The PM Contacts mobile web app. To load the app on any iOS or Android device, point your browser to: http://www.publishersmarketplace.com/pm/contacts. (It will work on modern Blackberry devices as well, but not ancient ones, and most anything that supports jQuery Mobile.) Your device should then show you how to add the app to your home screen with one click. It provides access to the full PM contacts database, plus adds a few great […]
Remarkable
We’re delighted to acknowledge one of those marvelous moments that you never see coming, but you’re always thrilled when they occur: PublishersMarketplace.com is 10 years old. As always, our greatest thanks go to you, our members and subscribers; we exist to serve the community that supports us. Second on the list is our founding webmaster, still at the helm of this ever-growing codebase, Michael Macrone. It is a little strange and very gratifying to travel the journey from idea to institution before one’s very eyes. The simple idea ten years ago was to create a community center online, for publishing […]
Technology and Treats (Part One: Appiness)
Last year we happily experimented with creating web apps to organize and inform the BEA experience, and now we are back with new and improved versions. Two new features come directly from user feedback: 1. The iOS and Android versions use some HTML 5 magic to work offline as well as online. That means that when the mysterious Javits Center electromagnetic force field renders you unable to connect to either a cell tower or wifi at 21st-century speeds, the Publishers Lunch BEA to Go app will still let you search the events schedule and exhibitor directory. Just make sure that […]
