Author Lauren Groff and her husband, Clay Kallman, will open The Lynx bookstore in Gainesville, FL next year, Shelf Awareness reports. The 2,300-square-foot store will be located in the South Main Station area of downtown Gainesville and will specialize in titles by Florida authors and books that are banned in the state. The owners plan to “institute a profit-sharing model” for employees, and they are currently looking for a general manager.
Penguin Random House Acquires Hay House
Penguin Random House continues to expand, acquiring mind-body-spirit, self-help, health and wellness publisher Hay House, for undisclosed terms. Long self-distributed, Hay House moved their distribution to PRHPS in 2018. They have a backlist of over 1,500 titles. Hay House ceo Reid Tracy will continue to run the operation, and “no changes are planned for its Carlsbad, CA, New York, and London offices, or its management and employees.” The company was founded in 1984 by Louise Hay, author You Can Heal Your Life. September Trade Sales Show Lower Returns
The AAP released StatShot data for September, reporting total trade sales of $826.8 million, down slightly from $839.4 million last year. Adult books fell 4.4 percent to $554 million in the month. Hardcovers gained 8.2 percent to $223.8 million, while paperbacks fell 15.7 percent to $171.5 million. Ebooks were down too, 5.8 percent to $70.2 million, while digital audio grew 2.2 percent to $58.9 million. Continuing their upswing from August, children’s books saw a gain after months of losses, with overall sales of 272.8 million, up 5.1 percent from 2022. Del Rey Removes Cait Corrain’s Book From 2024 Schedule Following Goodreads Controversy
Del Rey posted online that it has removed Cait Corrain’s debut CROWN OF STARLIGHT from next year’s publishing schedule, following a controversy in which Corrain created multiple Goodreads accounts to give other debut authors one-star reviews. Corrain’s book was set to be published on May 14. The publisher writes, “We are aware of the ongoing discussion around author Cait Corrain. CROWN OF STARLIGHT is no longer on our 2024 publishing schedule.” Corrain herself notes in a lengthy apology on Twitter that two of the writers she review bombed, Molly X.
