Michael Pietsch will retire from his role as CEO of Hachette Book Group and take on a new role as chairman, effective January 1, it was announced Tuesday. Pietsch will hold that new role for one year. Hachette UK CEO David Shelley becomes CEO for both Hachette Book Group and Hachette UK, part of a “new English language management structure” for HBG “to develop the longstanding excellent collaboration” between the US and UK companies. National Book Awards Prepare For Protest As Zibby Media Withdraws Sponsorship
At least one sponsor of tomorrow’s National Book Awards ceremony recently withdrew their support of the event. CEO of Zibby Media Zibby Owens provided PL with a lengthy statement and posted it Tuesday morning. Owens had written to NBF executive director Ruth Dickey earlier this week after hearing a report that nominees might be planning collective action at the ceremony. Entangled Is Working On A Solution to ‘Iron Flame’ Misprints
Entangled Publishing said in a statement that it’s working to correct misprints in the new Rebecca Yarros novel Iron Flame that published on November 7. Entangled reportedly indicated the book sold more than half a million copies on its release day, and some of the copies had irregularities including damaged pages, missing pages, upside down pages, and more, which readers catalogued on TikTok. Judge Dismisses Portions of Authors’ Lawsuit Against Meta
Judge Vince Chhabria of the US District Court in Northern California has dismissed portions of Richard Kadrey, Sarah Silverman, and Christopher Golden’s class action lawsuit against Meta. The judge granted Meta’s motion to dismiss claims that the output of Meta’s large language model, LLaMA, infringes on their copyrights, saying that he didn’t understand how the AI tool’s output was similar to Silverman’s book. The plaintiffs may amend the claim, but for it to stand they must “argue that LLaMa’s output was substantially similar to their works,” Reuters reports.
