Last March, the indie press world was rocked by the abrupt closure of Small Press Distribution, which had operated since 1969 and represented about 300 client publishers. The company cited declining sales and loss of grant support as the reasons for the shuttering. Its 300,000-book inventory was transferred to Ingram Content Group, and many presses were left in a bind, without a distributor or access to inventory data, and in some cases had to pay to have their stock returned to them. Publishers File Amended Complaint Against Iowa Book Ban Law
Penguin Random House, Hachette Book Group, HarperCollins, Macmillan, and Simon & Schuster, as well as The Authors Guild and authors including John Green and Jodi Picoult, have filed a new complaint in their suit against a book banning law in Iowa. The case has been litigated since late last year: In December a district court enjoined the law, but after an appeal by the state, the appellate court reversed the decision and sent it back to the district court. Scholastic Reports Modest Improvements
Scholastic reported results for the first quarter of fiscal year 2025, with sales of $ 237 million, up 4 percent from the same period last year, due to strong sales from 9 Story Media Group and offset by declines in the education segment. The seasonal operating loss improved 11 percent to $(88.5) million, attributed to gains in the children’s publishing and distribution segment.
