Bertelsmann released half year results for 2024, with sales at Penguin Random House of €2.276 billion ($2.46 billion), up 8.5 percent, compared to €2.098 billion a year ago, “largely attributable to publishing acquisitions” along with organic growth in the US and Spanish-speaking businesses. Bookshop UK Launches Buyback Program
Bookshop.org in the UK has launched Bookloop, a program allowing customers to trade in used books for store credit. Customers can either leave books at a drop-off point or have them picked up at home. Bookshop will continue to only sell new books, but will trade the books to Zeercle, the company that also operates WH Smith’s buyback program. Distinct from the WH Smith program, Zeercle will not sell the used Bookshop books through Amazon-owned sites. Len Riggio Dies at 83
The man who built Barnes & Noble into a bookselling powerhouse Len Riggio died at age 83 following a battle with Alzheimer’s disease. In addition to building and running Barnes & Noble, Riggio also founded Barnes & Noble College Booksellers, MBS Textbook Exchange, and GameStop.
