People: Shear Promoted; Remembering King; Viz Layoffs

May 12, 2010
By Michael Cader

At St. Martin’s, Matthew Shear has been promoted to evp and publisher, continuing to report to president and publisher Sally Richardson. As ceo John Sargent notes, “though a structure with two publishers in the same company is a bit unorthodox, I believe it truly reflects how they work together.” Richardson and Shear have worked together at SMP for 15 years.

Sargent writes in his announcement: “St. Martin’s has grown tremendously over the last decade under the leadership of Sally Richardson and Matthew Shear. Much of the success of the company has been a result of this great partnership.” the promotion is “to recognize Matthew’s contribution to this growth and to insure that we bring a publisher’s time, effort and skill across the breadth of the St. Martin’s list.”

Editor of the Washington Post’s Book World section for over a decade Nina King, 68, died May 6 from complications related to Parkinson’s disease.

A memorial service will be held this Friday in Alexandria, VA, at 2 PM (Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 1608 Russell Road).

In the continuing retrenchment of the manga market, San Francisco’s Viz Media is laying off approximately 60 people, comprising approximately 40 percent of their staff, PW reports. The company said in a statement they are “restructuring to adjust to changing industry and financial market realities.”
