LAT book editor David Ulin is shifting roles and will serve as a book critic for the paper. Nothing was said about who will take over Ulin’s post.

Borders Group chief financial officer Mark Bierley will spend his extra time in the additional role of chief operating officer for Borders Inc., now overseeing finance, IT, merchandising planning and supply chain, as well as real estate and strategic planning. Rosalind (Roz) Thompson has been appointedsvp, human resources, starting July 6. Most recently she was a principal at Orange Hill Associates, an HR consultancy she established in 2007.

Catherine Onder has joined Disney-Hyperion as senior editor. She has been an editor at Harper Children’s for the past seven years.

Dutch author Gerbrand Bakker‘s debut novel THE TWIN, translated by David Colmer, won the 2010 IMPAC DUBLIN Literary Award. It’s published in the US by Brooklyn-based non-profit literary press Archipelago Books (and distributed by Consortium).

Winner of the Nobel Prize for literature in 1998 Jose Saramago, 87, died at his home in the Canary Islands.His primary publisher in the US is Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, which plans to release his next novel, THE ELEPHANT’S JOURNEY, on September 8. It’s described as “the enchanting tale of an elephant, his keeper, and their eventual journey through 16th century Europe — based on a true story.”

Artist and writer Sebastian Horsley, author of the 2008 autobiography DANDY IN THE UNDERWORLD, about his addiction to heroin, died Thursday at his London home of a suspected drug overdose.
