Among approximately 35 layoffs at the San Diego Union Tribune: books editor and art critic Robert Pincus. The paper describes the process of “reshaping our newsroom” which includes new hires and revised vision of what the paper should cover. While promising “coverage of pop and classical music, theater and fine art” and a new “critic-at-large who ventures beyond entertainment and the arts,” there’s no mention of books coverage or a replacement for Pincus.

Dorling Kindersley deputy ceo Andrew Phillips is taking over as president of Penguin International, one of the posts vacated by David Davidar, overseeing Penguin’s businesses in India, Africa and the Middle East. He will work from an office in Delhi.

Meanwhile, former Penguin Canada employee Samantha Francis responded briefly to the recent statement issuement by Davidar’s attorney, reaffirming that she supports Lisa Rundle’s case rather than Davidar’s contention that they “had a personal misunderstanding which had been resolved.” She tells the Globe and Mail, “I think there’s a lot implied in the fact that I’ve supported Lisa.”

Niki Papadopoulos has joined McGraw-Hill Professional’s business group as editor. Previously she was at Public Affairs.

At Delacorte Press, Krista Marino has been promoted to executive editor.

BN.com general manager Mike Skagerlind is leaving to become svp and general manager at iVillage.com.

Borders filed compensation information on its top executives with the SEC. Michael Edwards stays at his current salary of $750,000, Recently promoted cfo (and coo of Borders Inc.) Mark Bierley gets a raise to $600,000 and evp, general counsel Thomas Carney gets a salary increase to $450,000. All three also receive stock options. Compensation for new Borders Group ceo Bennett LeBow was not disclosed.

The Joy Harris Agency and the Stuart Krichevsky Agency are now sharing office space at 381 Park Avenue South, maintaining their independent agencies.

Journalist and historian Rick Atkinson has won the $100,000 2010 Pritzker Military Library Literature Award for Lifetime Achievement in Military Writing.
