Random House’s distribution unit announced a new marketing service that provides their clients with “a range of robust tools for pursuing online marketing opportunities.” Manager, digital and paperback marketing at Crown Jay Sones will move to RH Publisher Services, where he will be senior online marketing manager, in charge of the new program. Penguin Takes Classics to Egypt In New Joint Venture
The WSJ reports that Penguin is about to announce a joint venture with Egypt-based publisher Dar El Shorouk to publish books from the company’s Classics line in Arabic. The line is expected to debut in “the first half of 2011,” and will incorporate some Arabic classics as well. Dar El Shorouk chairman Ibrahim El Moallem believes the ebook editions in particular “will go all over the place,” even in Arabic-speaking countries where authorities try to censor books. Rosetta Adds Children’s eBooks, In Another Amazon Exclusive
eBook publisher Rosetta Books is expanding into children’s books, having released digital versions of the entire line of 73 Rainbow Magic books for the US market. As with some of their previous releases, they are sold exclusively through the Kindle store for the next year, in exchange for what Rosetta founder Arthur Klebanoff calls “prominent site promotion.” Rosetta licensed the ebooks from HIT Entertainment, which controls the property, and obtained ebook rights to future titles as well. Sony Finally Announces Reading Apps
As Sony has rapidly declined from their former position as the No. 2 ebookseller in the US, many publishers have been mystified by the company’s lack of innovation and response to market trends. In a small glimmer of reformation, their ReaderStore has announced that they will finally start adding cross-platform apps–just like every other major vendor already has in place–some time in December. Yaged to Run Macmillan Children’s, and More People News
Macmillan has hired Jonathan Yaged to take over as president of their children’s publishing group from Dan Farley, reporting to company ceo John Sargent. Yaged had been publisher of the Disney Book Group before leaving there at the end of last year to join web-based marketer House Party as chief operating office. Macmillan imprint publishers Simon Boughton, Jean Feiwel, and Roger Priddy will report to Yaged, along with director of marketing Joy Dallanegra-Sanger.
