People, Etc.: On Adrienne Rich, Uggie the Dog, and More

March 28, 2012
By Sarah Weinman

Pioneering feminist poet and essayist Adrienne Rich, 82, died Tuesday at her home in Santa Cruz of complications from long-term rheumatoid arthritis, her son Pablo Conrad told the LAT. Rich won a number of prestigious prizes for her poetry and prose throughout her career, including the Yale Young Poets prize, the National Book Award, the Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize and the Dorothea Tanning Award given by the Academy of American Poets.

Uggie, the dog who co-starred in Oscar-winner The Artist, has signed with Alan Nevins at Renaissance Literary & Talent to represent his “autobiography,” currently titled “Uggie, My Story.” British author Wendy Holden is working with the ten-year-old Jack Russell and Nevins intends to offer the proposal next week, for release in fall 2012.

Carrie Bloxson will join HarperCollins as vp, marketing on April 19, reporting to Angela Tribelli. Bloxson will be responsible for developing divisional marketing tools and capabilities, and will also oversee the group marketing operations, ensuring that company products and initiatives are systematically and successfully rolled out to target audiences. Previously she oversaw the planning and execution of digital marketing products at NYC & Company.

Elissa Altman has joined Rodale Books as editor-at-large, where she will help develop, edit and oversee the food and cooking, health, and lifestyle list. She was most recently executive managing cookbook editor at Edible Communities. In addition, Rodale Books announced a number of promotions: Ursula Cary moves up to senior editor; George Karabotsos will oversee all art direction for the division; and Kyle Western has been promoted to digital product manager, overseeing ebook strategy.

At Rizzoli, Jessica Napp has been promoted to associate director of publicity.

At Riverhead, Sarah Stein has been promoted to associate editor at Riverhead. She has worked there since 2006.

At Thomas Nelson, vp of licensing and export sales Daisy Hutton will become fiction publisher as of May 1. She will replace Allen Arnold, who launched Nelson’s fiction division eight years ago, who has accepted a new position at Ransomed Heart Ministries in Colorado Springs, CO.

Author of 88 books Loree Lough is joining digital publisher Lighthouse Publishing of the Carolinas as an associate editor, working on a new romance imprint that will start in 2013, publishing four titles a year.

At Book Country, editorial coordinator Danielle Poiesz will be transitioning to Penguin’s technology team as a QA Specialist beginning on April 9. In addition, Nevena Georgieva joins full-time in the new role of Book Country assistant beginning on April 23.
