When Canada’s dominant book chain Indigo made comprehensive changes to its co-op program last year, local publishers were not exactly happy. Now they are upset again over further co-op increases that went into effect on April 1, but are only beginning to register with some publishers. Patrick Nolan has been promoted to vp, editor-in-chief and associate publisher at Penguin Books, reporting to Kathryn Court. He fills the position being vacated by Stephen Morrison when he joins Picador. Nolan has spent the past 12 years as director of trade paperback sales, and in his new role Nolan will be responsible for overseeing the editorial direction and shape of the Penguin Books list. “Patrick has been a big part of Penguin’s success over the last decade, and I very much look forward to working with him in his new role,” Court said in a statement. Sourcebooks Starts Romance eBook Club
Sourcebooks launches their latest experiment today, a subscription plan for romance readers the company is positioning as an ebook club and community. Discover A New Love offers subscribers one of four featured romance titles a month, at $9.99 for a six-month plan (so about $1.67 per book). Members can purchase additional titles at discount, and some club selections are available a month before general release. While the initial hook is value, Sourcebooks sees the long-term appeal as discovery and community. Forthcoming: The Last of the Last Lion Books
Eight years after William Manchester died at age 82, the third volume in his landmark “Last Lion” series on Winston Churchill will be published. Written by Paul Reid, working from Manchester’s beginnings, The Last Lion: Winston Spencer Churchill: Defender of the Realm, 1940-1965 will be published November 1 by Little, Brown. Amazon is taking pre-orders for the ebook only at the moment, with an agency price of $19.99. The book is listed as running 1,729 pages. No print price is listed yet.
