Oxford University Press announced a number of recent promotions. Bill Haydis has been promoted to Head of US stock planning and publications, while Chris Critelli moves up to reprints and manufacturing supplier manager. Jen Abrams has been appointed demand planning team leader, while Tracy Rabon moves up to US publications team leader. Barry Koen and Nissa Papillon have been promoted to demand planner, while Nancy Wu moves up to stock planning project manager.

Marie Kent joins Free Press today as imprint marketing manager, reporting to Nicole Judge. She was in the school and library marketing department at Penguin Children’s.

At Chronicle Books, Naomi Kirsten has been promoted to editor, children’s group.

At Holiday House, Sylvie Frank has been promoted to editor and Sally Morgridge moves up to editorial assistant.

Director of University of New Orleans Press Bill Lavender was laid off Friday as part of the current round of state-mandated budget cuts for public universities in Louisiana, NOLA.com reports. Lavender, who also led the school’s low-residency MFA in Creative Writing program, was at the UNO Press for the past five years and was its sole paid employee.

Gene Smith, 83, author of presidential biographies including WHEN THE CHEERING STOPPED: THE LAST YEARS OF WOODROW WILSON (1964) and THE SHATTERED DREAM: HERBERT HOOVER AND THE GREAT DEPRESSION (1970) died of bone cancer on July 25 at his home in Poughkeepsie, NY.
